The Wilderness Hotel

The Wilderness Hotel has a grand tradition as a honeymoon spot, a family hotel and a tourist and business destination. It?s steeped in tradition and it?s got a warm, old-style charm, but it?s also a modern hotel with all the facilities you need. The 150-bedroom property boasts a beauty spa, two swimming pools, a bowling green, two tennis courts, a squash court and six banqueting halls and conference rooms ? the largest of which can accommodate up to 400 delegates in cinema style. The Wilderness Hotel is situated almost in the centre of the Garden Route ? it?s about 45 minutes? drive to both Mossel Bay and Knysna, and a little less than an hour to Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo, so it?s perfectly placed for tour groups and individuals who want a base from which to explore the region. In fact, the Garden Route and Klein Karoo area itself is the hotel?s greatest attraction. It?s a Mecca for sport and adventures: the city of George is only about 10 minutes? drive from our front door and the airport is about 15 minutes away, and Wilderness is part of the unfenced Garden Route National Park ? with some of its most popular walks and trails. The village of Wilderness is nestled between the Kaaimans River and the Wilderness National Park. The Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean form a natural border to the North & South. Appreciated for its green beauty and romantic lagoon as well as golden beaches that continue into the horizon. Wilderness has gained a reputation as an internationally sought after holiday destination. From as early as the 1800's, the village of Wilderness was renowned for its hospitality and the incredible natural beauty of the region. At the time a small stone farmhouse was the only structure in the area, and through this the legend of "Wilderness hospitality and goodwill" was created. A boarding house was established in the old farmstead, which later in 1924 was upgraded into the Wilderness Hostel, its great reputation was further developed as the Wilderness Hotel from the 1930's right through to the end of the 1950's. Later came the Karos Wilderness Hotel until 2001 when it was operated by Protea Hotels and known as the Protea Hotel Wilderness Resort. Since 2008 the hotel has suffered a stormy period but has now come full circle and is once again known as The Wilderness Hotel. During its time Wilderness has played host to many a celebrity and was a stopover point for Princess Elizabeth during the Royal visit to South Africa in the 1940's. In the late 1930's the Hotel was in fact the location for the meetings of an organisation that today is known as "South African Tourism". As a bastion of the South African hospitality industry it will be with great pleasure thet the management and staff welcome you to this historic location.
